How long does a typical strategic planning process take?

"If you quit on the process, you are quitting on the result."
Idowu Koyenikan

This is a question we are regularly asked at Woodland Strategies. Typically, a full strategic planning process can take up to six to eight months, depending on how in-depth the organizational planning team wants to take things.

Your messaging – your values, mission and vision statements – can, and should, last between eight and twelve weeks. This is really the most fundamental part of your plan. It should never be rushed.

Strategic plans should also at a minimum include an Environmental Scan, Stakeholder Analysis, SWOT Analysis, Strategic Risk Assessment, and Evaluations – in addition to the regular Goals, Objectives and Action plans.

Glossary of Strategic Planning Terms

The following list includes some – but not all – of the most common terms used in strategic planning. Many planners might have a different interpretation of a particular term, especially if they primarily use one model of strategic planning. The most important requirement around the use of strategic terms and concepts is that the facilitator and strategic planning leadership team share common interpretations from planning to conducting to implementation of the strategic planning process.
